  • If you're brewing on a flat-bottom dripper, the Kalita Wave is probably your paper. Designed specifically for Kalita's flat-bottom brewers, these are some of the most trusted filter papers in specialty coffee, used in cafés and home setups the world over. They come in two sizes (155 and 185) and produce clean, balanced cups with the kind of repeatability that makes dialling in a lot less painful.

The 20-wave construction keeps much of the paper away from the dripper walls, creating space for water to flow evenly through the coffee bed. Combined with Kalita's flat-bottom, three-hole design, this makes for a forgiving brewing setup that's straightforward to use and easy to get consistent results from.

They're made in Japan from oxygen-bleached, FSC-certified pulp and are compostable after use. We're the UK importer for Kalita, so you can get both 155 and 185 filters directly from us.

Which Kalita Wave filter size do I need?

155: Generally a great choice for single brews of around 200–250ml. If you mostly make a smaller cup for yourself, this is the one we'd recommend.

185: Better suited to bigger brews of around 400–500ml or more, making it a good choice if you're brewing for two or simply appreciate a bigger mug. The 185 can also be used for smaller 200–250ml brews, but its larger brewing area creates a wider, shallower coffee bed, which can affect how the coffee brews.

The 155 and 185 refer to the approximate diameter of the Wave filter paper when it is laid flat, in millimetres. Make sure you match the filter size to your brewer: 155 filters for 155 brewers and 185 filters for 185 brewers.

How to brew with Kalita Wave filters

Our simple Wave recipes use the same basic pouring pattern for both sizes, scaled up for a larger brew. They're a great starting point for getting to know your brewer.

    Single cup - Wave 155

    • Coffee: 15g
    • Water: 250g at 93°C
    • Grind: Medium filter
    • Bloom: 50g at 0:00
    • First pour: 100g at 0:30 - around 50g in gentle circles, followed by 50g through the centre
    • Final pour: 100g at 1:10 - repeat the same pouring pattern
    • Total brew time: 2:30–3:00

Brew for two - Wave 185

    • Coffee: 30g
    • Water: 500g at 93°C
    • Grind: Medium filter
    • Bloom: 100g at 0:00
    • First pour: 200g at 0:30 - around 100g in gentle circles, followed by 100g through the centre
    • Final pour: 200g at 1:30 - repeat the same pouring pattern
    • Total brew time: 3:30–4:00

These timings are a starting point rather than a rigid target. If your coffee tastes sour or under-extracted, try grinding finer; if it tastes bitter, dry or heavy, try grinding coarser.

Can I use Kalita Wave filters in other brewers?

Yes. Kalita Wave papers are also compatible with a range of other flat-bottom and Wave-style brewers. The 155 and 185 sizes are used by brewers including Orea, Origami, April and Fellow, although compatibility depends on the specific brewer and filter size.

Wave-style papers can behave differently from one brewer to another, so you may need to adjust your grind size, pouring style or brew time. Our Kalita recipe is a useful starting point for experimenting with other compatible brewers too.

  • Do I need to rinse Kalita Wave filters before brewing?
It's optional, but we recommend rinsing the filter with hot water before brewing. It helps remove any papery taste and preheats the filter, dripper and brewing vessel. Discard the rinse water before adding your coffee.
What's the difference between the 155 and 185 sizes?
The 155 is generally best suited to smaller single brews of around 200–250ml, while the 185 is better for larger brews of around 400–500ml or more. The 185 can also be used for smaller brews, although its larger brewing area creates a wider, shallower coffee bed. The numbers refer to the approximate diameter of the filter paper when laid flat, in millimetres.
Can I use Kalita Wave filters in other drippers?
Yes. The 185 fits brewers including the Orea V3 and V4, Origami Dripper M, April Brewer and Fellow Stagg X. The 155 is compatible with brewers including the Orea V3 Small, Origami Dripper S and Torch Mountain Dripper. Always check your brewer's recommended filter size before ordering.
What's the difference between boxed (50) and bagged (100)?
The filters are identical. It's purely about packaging and quantity. The boxed version contains 50 filters in a rigid box, while the bagged version contains 100 in a resealable bag. Both packaging options are available in 155 and 185 sizes.
How should I brew with Kalita Wave filters?
For a simple starting point, try 15g of coffee to 250g of water with a Wave 155, or 30g of coffee to 500g of water with a Wave 185. Use a medium filter grind, bloom for 30 seconds, then split the remaining water into two pours. See our Kalita Wave brew guide for the full recipes and step-by-step instructions.
Are Kalita Wave filters environmentally friendly?
They're made from oxygen-bleached, FSC-certified pulp. Once you've finished brewing, the used paper filter and coffee grounds can go into a suitable compost bin. Check your local composting guidance if you're unsure.
    Are Kalita Wave filters compostable?
Yes. The plain paper filters can be composted along with spent coffee grounds. Check the guidance for your home or local composting service if you're unsure what they accept.
